  1. Heya Pie's, I will have to hold off from getting a marine tank up and running now My Car has crapped out because of that rain on Tuesday, I hit a deep puddle at the bottom of Saint Micheals cres, and the electrics are buggered, so need to spend my spare monies there, *sigh* stuipd modern cars!!. Though i wouldn't mind borrowing that book still, if that is still alright. I need to try and get my head around the set-up and maintance of a tropical marine tank, and decide if i am up to it or not.
  2. No, I do not dive, it's something i want to learn but either don't have the time or the money to do it at the same time. But i will call you later in the week if that is fine and borrow this book, if that is fine also, and do a little reading and see if i am up to having a tropical saltwater marine tank. There seems to be a whole lot more involved that i first figured. As for fish, i was going to get anything that wouldn't annoy the seahorses, so have to be very peaceful
  3. All I have to say to that pies, is "HEll YA". Any help would be awesome and actually seeing a working set-up would be awesome, just hope you can put up with a million and one questions and probably quite a few blank looks like this , or :-?. Thx's for that tip on the book, i will see if i can find a second hand copy some where.
  4. I have cut and posted this in the beginners corner, due to the fact i will be a beginner to tropical saltwater, I have had for 2 yr's a native cold water marine tank and before that tropical fresh water tank for about 6 yr's, so not new to fishkeeping but a complete noob to tropical marine. Hello all, I mentioned that in the welcome page, i was thinking about starting a warm or tropical seahorse tank, ie, H. kuda and a few ozzy's, and did some investigating today, about what i need, ie equipment and cost. I found out I know crap about what i need and that there are NO stores in Wellington that can show me on the shelves what i need, though I found a guy at Animates called Jamie, who was helpful but i had to order though him what i wanted and as a newbie, i don't know what i need, so a bit buggered there. It's so different to my native cold water marine set-up, I have a fuval 204 and thats about it, plus light's of course and I change my water about every 2 weeks, I collect my water from Pukarua bay. Thats all i have done and I have had no loss's in over a yr, minus the baby's dieing So this post is about, what do i need equipment and environment wise. Plus any site's were i can read anything that would be helpful and of course i supplier that has reasonable prices. I know of Eric at Wet Pets/Touch of Country in Palmy but there must be other places who i can deal with. Thanking you, Malcolm.

    heya all.

Hi, My names Malcolm and I am living in Wellington now, but grew up in Palmerston North. I first became interested in Tropical fish when i was studing Landscape design and Hort. at Wanganui Polytechnic about 7-8 yrs ago now. But now i have moved onto Cold water Marine. ie. SEAHORSES. (I just love watching them, float around the tank and hunt shrimp). I have only one tank at the moment, a 3 footer but I am in the process of either building/or buying a 1200 x 450 x 500 tank, for which to relocate my seahorses and get a couple more seahorses to boot I have my tank set up in a rockpool style but as yet unsuccessful at growing the plants that i have found, but reading some of the post's here, i might have found some very helpful idea's, which i am very greatful for. With my unused tank, I am thinking about using it as a warmer salt water tank and getting either semi-tropical or tropical seahorses, i know some ozzy one's are over here but not so sure on the types and numbers, plus most importantly COST  Oh yea, are there any FNZAS groups in the Wellington region besides Upper Hutt?
  8. Does anyone know what lighting level i need to keep marine plants alive, like the types that you find in rock pool's around the country, i have tried and tried. they must need a crap load cause at one stage i had 4, 3 foot power glo's on my 3 foot tank and that fail and yes i did work up from 2,3 then finally 4 light's, so i am figuring that i wasn't cooking them with too much light and i still haven't got the right lighting level yet :-?, so have given up for the time being and live with fake plants  I have in my tank, heaps rocks, a couple of bivalue type shellfish, a lot of different starfish, chiton's, univalve shellfish, crabs, 2 types of shrimp, barnacles, about 6 different types of sea anemones (which are awesome when they all open up) and i finally managed to get a kina and 2 wandering anemone, on my last hunting trip for shrimp. whooo hooo but nothing is as good as having living seaweed/plants. I could use deeper level plants but i want my tank to look like a rock pool.
  9. Hey all  I have so far failed to raise baby seahorses thus far. the first batch happened about 4 days after buying a male that turned out to be pregger's. So wasn't ready at all, and between the filter and some shrimp that i put in for the seahorses to hunt and eat, which turned out to be the hunters and got quite a few of the babies instead :-? , I ended up with none. I have since have had 2 other preg's aswell but I must be feeding them the wrong food (Mainly Brine shrimp) or not enough, either way they aren't surviving, Plus i am using seawater from Pukarua bay, so figure that there are organism's in the water to give them a varied diet but that isn't working. So would love any inside knowledge, on how to increase the odd's.
  10. Wow, thank's jo and peg's. I have been hunting on-line for about a week or 2 for design idea's and in one nite i find everything that i need  NO i haven't been to FNZAS site before this, i don't know how i missed it. I used to belong to the Wanganui chapter of FNZAS, while studing there but now, I live in Wellington and have just discovered you guy's have one in Upper Hutt, so might check it out. I will post how how my tank turn's out and throw my 2 cents worth about what i have learn't about seahorses.
  11. Heya all, I am new to this forum but i have keep tropicals for about 5-6 yrs and started getting into keeping seahorses in the last year or so. I have decided to build my own customized tank, (which i think will show off the seahorses and their living environment better) due to the fact that the local pet store want to charge me nearly $800 for a 1200mm lenght, 450mm width and 500mm high tank, which i think is insane. I know that i need 10mm thick glass and i know what type of silcone to use, but thats about where my knowledge end's. I have been trying to find a site on how to build my own tank (ie. construction techniques) but so far i have been unable to find a helpful site. So any help or tips you want to throw in this direction would be great.
