  1. I have aquired a full sized chocolate catfish, i'm not sure what i should be feeding it. I already use shrimp pellets, spirulina discs, discus tucker and bloodworms for various other fish in the tank, will this be enough or does it need something else. There was a gimpy neon and a guppy i didn't like in the tank when i put it in but they have gone missing. Am i right in suspecting the choc catfish? Its the only one with a big enough mouth

  2. Does anyone konw where to get the sort of foam used in filters. All I can find is the closed cell stuff they use in matresses and buying stuff precut for filters is expensive. Surely it must be cheaper in bulk

  3. I made my whole tank out of fiberglass a year ago and have had no problems with the fish. It is polyester resin and fiberglass over plywood then I coated the inside with epoxy resin. A friend tried just using polyester resin for a pond and all the fish died.

  4. I am looking at making a fiberglass/plywood fish tank 1600 x 600 x 600.

i was wanting to put a bowed front panel in made out of perspex. Does anyone know how thick perspex needs to be for a fish tank this size?

  5. Sorry,

Anyway I should have mentioned this is my Discus Fish "Bluey" who I've had for about a year now.

I often see it do a whole body shimmery thing or flicking its fins in and out, is this common, does this mean anything?

  6. I have been looking at a lot of reef tanks on the internet that are set up overseas and I am starting to think I could try and make one (long term goal).

Is the stuff I'm seeing very availiable in New Zealand or are we limited in our selection and are the prices much different?

  7. Thanks for the help.

I'm pretty sure she is fat with eggs as the others in the tank are less than half the thickness of her and the fat all seems to be at the right place for eggs. Also she has gotten this big before and then pretty quicky became regular goby size.

The main problem I can think of is how can I stop Horse-faced loaches and Clown loaches getting to the eggs as they are quite a bit bigger than a little goby.

  8. My Bumble Bee Goby has become quite fat as several web pages say they do when the female is ready to lay eggs. It also says that they lay the eggs in a cave or shelter and the male guards them. Does this mean that I should not seperate them when I think she is going to lay her eggs to stop other fish from getting to them?

Also, are all egg layers eggs not fertilised till after they are laid and the male then fertilises them?

  9. Over the last few weeks I have noticed a film covering the surface of the water in my tank, my fish are now breathing faster since it got there. Does anyone know what it is and could it be stopping oxygen from entering the water? Also do air pumps and airstones help put oxygen into the water or do the bubbles just pass through?

  10. I think the bumble bee gobie could be pregnant because it is swelling up in the right places I think and it i thik it is a female because it is larger than the others. I don't think its an illness because it seems happy to eat and it has happened before, I watched it get bigger and bigger and then one day it was skinny again. I know they're brakish but I don't add any salt because I'm not sure how the discus will like it.

My clown loach is only small and I will proboly trade it for a smaller one when it gets bigger so it doesn't get nippy towards my other fish.

  11. I have a 3ft tank (soon I will get a bigger one) with 5 discus, 7 cardinals, 3 bumble bee gobies (currently one is pregnant and any tips with breeding these would be helpful), 1 clown loach, 1 clown pleco and 2 horse faced loaches. It is a little crowded but I have not had a sickness or death since last year so all is well.

  12. Can anyone give me an idea about how much I am able to get for a red turquoise in hamilton. It is about 12 cm and has great colouring but it has got too big for my tank and is harrasing my 4 other discus which are half the size.
