  1. Wow, yeah that remote ballast system looks easy to use! Might have to invest. Thanks for your help!
  2. Great idea ... will definatley do that!
  3. Good suggestion, though in this case the hood is mostly aluminium. At this point though I think I am just going to try to get the existing setup working ... I now think it is the bulbs ... tested the ballast witha multimeter and it seems to be ok.
  4. Where did you get the 24W tubes? On closer inspection that is what I currently have, but haven;t been able to find replacements.
  5. Ah, sorry - AFNZ = Aquarium Forum New Zealand. Was going by what it says at the top of the page.
  6. Cool, will definately check it out some time
  7. Ha ha ... we'll see! Might be a while before my personal discretionary spend gets reinstated! What with all the stuff babies need!
  8. Cool ... are you studying for it at vic? The avatar is a favourite picture I took of a Christmas Tree worm in Moorea (little island next to Tahiti in French Polynesia). I spent two and a half months in Moorea while I was working on my masters doing some of my own research (on a species of wrasse called Thalassoma amblycephalum) as well as carrying out some of my supervisors research there (on Thalassoma hardwicke). While I have freshwater tropicals, I am a marine biologist at heart! But hey, any fish are better than no fish!
  9. Thanks for the heads up ... I have a very new son though at the mo (he's just 13 days old), so my social life is somewhat limited! Do you meet monthly? Is there some place I can get some info about joining etc?
  10. Thanks, Ater reading may of the topics around lighting, I think I might see if I can change the whole Ballast for a more powerful one as 2x20W for a 100+ litre tank that is planted seems like it may be a little light (pardon the pun). Will also look into the connectors - is it esy to tell if they are waterproof ones ot not?
  11. Hi, I am new to AFNZ (surprised? )! I'm 25, male and fairly new to keeping fish (though I have a masters in Marine Biology!) I have two aquariums - a small one ~30litre with a breeding pair of Kribensis, and a largish 135l Sunsun, with 2 Angels, 8 Neons, 4 Rummy nose Tetras, 4 Serpae Tetras and a couple of spotted catfish (at least I think thats what they are - note that my masters is in Marine biology . Having some problems with the lights on my SunSun aquarium at mo, so anyone who might be able to halp, would love you to check my thread in the tech forum ("SunSun Lighting Problem"). Cheers!
  12. Thanks! The ballast has no starters - electrical type I believe. Thanks for the suggestion though!
  13. First of all let me say I'm new to this forum, and already have learned so much! I have a 135l SunSun aquarium, and am having intermittant failures of the lights. I noticed in another discussion someone mentioned that these aquariums often have problems with water getting into the lighting and shorting it out. On opening up the lid and removing the plate that covers the ballast I noticed a few drops of water in the cavity. Has someone had some experience fixing this - as it seems it may be the problem I am having? Either that or it is the bulbs - but I can't even find replacement bulbs either (it has 2x 20W 10,000K T5 tubes)! Would really appreciate any thoughts or tips anyone has on this.
