  2. Hi, Would this be the most hardiest plant that would survive in an African tank? Are there others as good or better? Can you cut the big thick stem to make smaller plants and does trimming the roots to say 5 cm slow growth? And finally does it grow just as good sitting on top of the gravel and what light does it do best in and what light will it tolerate? Thanks for your knowledgable answers.
  3. Hiya Tiden, Keen to get some. Who is MM and what are there contact details please?
  4. Hi malawiman, What date do you think you will be getting your NLS shippment in and approx how much do you think a 2.3 kg bucket of sinking cichlid pellets will be? Thanks
  5. Hi jolliolli, Where do you get your NLS from? Thanks
  6. Hi Ryan, I appreciate your efforts and advice. All I am doing is putting out a feeler to see if anyone else has bought any or have a channel of where and how to go about it. I am starting to get low on food and will be needing some soon. Maybe somone will have an alternative food for the intreim? Cheers
  7. Hi fishy_t, Apparently trout pellets help pollute the water too much, especially if any are left uneaten?
  8. Hi, My fish appear healthy and growing fast. I have been feeding them Wardley's mini floating cichlid pellets and Wardley's sinking crumbles. The sinking crumbles are no longer available and I do want to feed them sinking food. I have heard that NLS (New Life Spectum Premium fish food from Canada) is one of the best fish foods in the world. Does anyone know who sells this in NZ or who to go through to get this food? What do other people feed there African"s and has anyone got any suggestions? Thanks
  9. Thanks everyone for your advice. I will not mix the different species.
  10. Can Sciaenochromis Fryeri breed with Peacocks as I only want true fish species (strains)?
  11. Hi Smidey, I dont know how long as I noticed these 2 peacocks were staying in the background and not eating. Lack of knowledge and experience from me doesnt help. I only assumed that maybe they were holding and........ cheers
  12. Hi, thanks for your advice. Gave them forth treatment and white spot now gone but will try permanent mild dose of rock salt. Thanks
  13. Hi, I bit the bullet on Sunday and stripped both fish at once. 61 fry. Half free swimming, half with yolk sac (lost 9 yolk sac over the next couple days) Now all free swimming and doing well. Thanks for your advice.
  14. Hi, I have 2 female jacobs holding. I have placed them both together (along with a tank cleaning bristlenose) in a floating 10L container in main tank. I know being together is not ideal but will it be alright? When the fry are spat out and swimming do the parents (or other female or bristlenose)eat their fry? Should I have some java moss or similar to help stop getting eaten? Do the female parents eat food when holding? Thanks
  15. Hi, I have a 6' African tank that includes bistlenoses and 20 clownloaches. I noticed 5 clowns only have whitespot. I have raised the temp to 30c and have treated water with the recommended dose every 3 days (3 times now) with VIP white spot cure (includes malachite green). It hasnt as yet got rid of the white spot. Am I treating correctly? Apart from using chemicals like malachite green (which is carcingenic to humans) is there a better or altenative treatment? I have heard that a quanity of rock salt added to the tank water permantly helps build up the slime on fish like clownloaches thus preventing whitespot occuring? If this is correct can anyone recommend what dose of rock salt / litre to use? Prevention is better than cure! Thanks
  16. Hi, I have peacocks, electric yellows, demasoni, clown loaches and bristlenoses. Will java fern or twisted vallesneria be ok? What plants if any will survive that lot? Have you any for sale? Please pm me. Thanks
  17. The ammonia level still remains at 1 ppm. Nitrite and Nitrate are both 0 ppm. If the ammonia level gets higher I will do another water change.
  18. Thanks for your reply. I am feeding them x2 / day with flake food. I have read the link you sent me. Most helpful. I will reduce the food by 1/2 and will test for nitrates and nitrites. I thought stress zyme really helped speed things up alot. It may still take at least another week or more for the tank to have cycled?
  19. Hi, 12 days ago I set up a new tank in the back shed which has transparent roofing above which should let in ample light. Treated the water with stress coat and stress zyme. Temperature 26c, ph 8. Added x100 2.5cm elect yellows, demasoni's and bristlenoses hence ammonia 1ppm. I bought 10 plants (in a courier bag with water) 20cm long and placed the roots into bedrock gravel. The top 10cm of leaf went "not good" and has broken off. The bottom 10cm "looks" ok. Are these plants dying or does it take them a while to get established? Any advise would be greatly appreciated as I want to have a good planted tank. Thanks
  20. Hi, I have a new 6' tank, holds 575L of water, 45L of bedrock gravel, Eheim 2080 filter (inc 12L of substrate) suitable for up to 1200L tank and pump output is 1700L / hour. Set up new tank 12 days ago, treated the water with stress coat and stress zyme. Put x50 2.5cm elect yellows in. After 5 days noticed ammonia had risen to 1ppm. On 7th day drained 2/3 water, treated with stress coat and stress zyme again. Ammonia had reduced to .5ppm. Added another x50 2.5cm demasoni's. 12th day ammonia has gradually crept back up to 1ppm. How long will the tank take to cycle so there is 0ppm ammonia and it is biologically safe? Am I likely to get an ammonia spike, at what level do they start to die? Can I put more fish in yet? I test for ammonia daily. In the long term as the fish grow I will reduce the numbers. Is what I am doing the best and fastest way to set up a new tank? Should I be doing water changes and how much? Also I have noticed some fish as they swim will "flick" over on their side to rub themselves momentarily on the gravel? Thanks for your help.
  21. WEKA and fishy_t awesome job. Well done!!! Hard to match. I wonder if anyone else has something similar?
  22. Hi Smidey, I have read all your forum answer and replies. Impressive. You have nice collection of fish. Thanks for mentioning these [rubbing salt into the wound], then saying they are not for sale [pulling the rug out from under my feet] ouch  l! let me know please if you know any one that has these for sale. Thanks
  23. Hi everyone, I would like to make a "rocky cave back ground" from a 150mm thick polystrene slab I have. I figure if I cut it so it fits into the inside back wall measurements of the tank so it wedges itself between the bottom of the tank and the top brace it will stay there. I will have to cut it vertically into "3" so I can get it into the tank. The vertical cuts will be crooked as to conform to the cave cut outs etc. I can shape the rock face using an angle grinder with a coarse sand paper disc , the caves can be dug out using a die grinder with a knurled ball bit and then by spraying solvent over this will give a smoother texture. Holdfast put out coloured pond sealers that can be painted on to give a black/grey mottled effect. I would appreciate any advice, links etc batman :bounce:
  24. Hi everyone, I enjoyed fish keeping a few years back and now want to set up a Malawi tank. The tank I have is 1550Lx500Wx700H. The fish I want to keep are bright coloured ie. Peacocks - aulonocara jacobfreibergi or similar, Electric blue haps - sciaenochromis ahli or similar, Electric yellows - labidochromis caefuleus or similar. Or otherwise what do you suggest and have you any for sale? I would ultimately like to buy 30-40 of each fish approx 2-5cm long in approx 1 months time. I would also like some advice on building a "rocky cave back ground" from a 150mm thick polystrene slab I have. Any advice on what fish to have, who has them for sale could you answer on the private trade and exchange section as I will be listing it there and how to make my rocky cave back ground would be listed on the DIY section to be answered there. Thanks batman :bounce:
