  1. Hi all.

I'm a recent engineering graduate who's had a couple of years experience. I really want to experience working overseas, especially in the US or UK. Did some Googling and couldn't find too much useful information, maybe I didn't look hard enough? Quite frankly I don't have too much idea how to go about this. Can anyone recommend some website that will get you started? Or perhaps some employment agencies?

I don't mind going overseas and working in a Cafe for example to start with, then moving on to find jobs that suit my qualifications. But how would you go about securing a Cafe job for example before you leave?

    Cheers for any advice.

P.S. I know this is a bit wayyyyyyyyy off topic, but then I figure it's an off topic forum so why not....

  2. This is the first time it's happened, which is why I was worried.

But I think I fill my up a little differently to yours. Mine has a lever which when I release, opens the hose and the tank water flows into the filter until it's fill.

I don't fill it up before I connect the hoses.

  3. Hi all

Have a Fluval 405 filter, very reliable for the past 2.5 years.

Today I did a filter clean. When I connected everything back up and filled the filter with water from the tank, I noticed a patch of water around the base of the filter. Power was not on yet.

I was really worried so I disconnected the filter from the hose, poured some water back into a bucket, noticed some drips of water coming from the seal. Is this normal? This is when the filter is on its side, NOT upright.

After that I connected it back up, filled it with water and plugged in the power, everything was normal, no leaks at all so far. Am I being paranoid? Maybe that water was from somewhere else?

Since it's 2.5 years old, is it time to replace anything? For example seal?

    Thanks a lot

  4. Hi all

I have a 2 year old Fluval 405 filter. Been running great, but just wondering if it's necessary to replace anything? Since it's been quite a while.

I'm asking because I definitely can't afford a breakdown now, due to being very busy etc...

    Thanks

  5. No need to store water.

I use water straight out of the tap. If your water quality is good it is perfectly safe to do so.

I use a adjustable nozzle, where I turn it and controls the type of flow. I turn it so the water comes out as almost a mist at high velocity, so that it creates plenty of area for chlorine to evaporate, if there is any at all.

  6. Ok, so no easy solution.

Probably have to sell the SAE. All the other fish the eel definitely won't be able to eat. This eel is definitely NOT shy, never has been. As it grows I'll have to be careful with hand feeding it as its jaws are getting pretty hard and sharp.

Another question. Would earth worms be safe for it to eat? There's a compost box where I dump my lawn trimmings in the garden, plenty of small earth worms in there.

  7. Hi all

Peacock eel, about 1.5 years since I bought it, grown significantly, about 20cm or a bit more.

Just now when the light was off I saw it trying to eat my Siamese Algae Eater, failed though as the fish was slightly too big and managed to get away, although visible scaring on its skin.

Anything I can do? Apart from selling one of them. Probably no other solution right? It's very well fed.

    Cheers

  8. I don't keep any discus myself.

But I would advice you to be very careful with your water parameters when keeping discus, they are very fragile, won't tolerate nitrate levels over 20ppm (I think).

For a discus tank, best to have lots of plants, they help with reducing nitrate as well.

  9. Hi all

Had this peacock eel for a year and a half now and has grown a lot. Noticed some white stuff on its head just now it's getting me quite worried. Wasn't there yesterday, but not sure about today.

Looks like something stuck onto its head rather than a growth of some sort. What could it be? Hopefully photo is clear enough for you to make it out.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

  10. Hi all

What are your experiences with these? Bought one today for almost $20, AquaOne brand.

I'm finding it totally useless. Thinking of asking for a refund. I'm trying to clean green algae from my glass but it's just not working at all.

Bought it from Hollywoods in Mt Roskill, they didn't give me a receipt, I didn't ask for one either, do you think they'll give me a refund without a receipt?

    Thanks

  11. This may not be a very good idea but...

Fish and other live creatures are very hard to control.

You could do something more on the physical and engineering side of things. Such as measuring the daily temperature fluctuations with and without heater, or the water flow rate through the filter and explain why over time the flow-rate drops.

Like I said maybe it's a terrible idea but it is definitely science.

  12. I don't understand why filters can be a pain?

I have an external filter, I clean it approximately once every 6 weeks, with weekly water changes.

I think a filter is crucial, especially for a tank this size, without a filter you will likely run into various problems with water quality.

  13. Hi all

Should I be worried about this? Normally I keep my tank at 25, now due to the warm temperature the tank goes to 28 without the heater, it starts at 27 in the morning and heats up to 28 by the evening.

What's your temperature like? Do I need to do anything?

    Cheers

  14. That's strange, my eel eats like a pig, when I hand feed him he would sometimes bite my finger rather than the food, his jaw is pretty hard too lol.

Does it look sick at all? Try isolating it in a seperate tank and see if it eats, also try different types of foods.
