I just harvested the plants out of the pond, atm they're in patassuim permangnate waiting to be planted in my tank. The stem plant does'nt seem to look like the Ludwigia repens i have in my tank, maybe because of the different growing conditions? they both look very similar only the leaves are a slightly different shape. Anyway i will see how it goes in the tank. Thanks for the help alanmin4304 and quack

Thanks for the reply quack, Thats just what i needed to hear! Does the hydrophila in your discus tank have red roots? you can see the red in the photo (i should have took a pic of a well rooted plant) Since i dont have much else to do i will take another photo just to make sure lol

hey people, I have these plants in my pond that i would'nt mind in my tank, i seached on google and couldn't find anything about them. Does anyone know what these are and would they suitable for my tank? The tank sits on about 27 degree's, i would soak them in potassium permanganate Plants are so pricy for small amounts so i figured why not use these as i have heaps and they look quite good! Thanks , Joe

Hey Jn, I found glossotigma in lake Rotaroa (about 1 hr out of Nelson) as it grows native threw out NZ i think, so maybe someone down your way knows of a lake that may have it? I got my self a reasnable size carpet out of a trip to the lake lol and i'm planing on making a trip back sometime soon for my other tank : ) Here is a pic of a glosso carpet i got of google

Finally my Ingrediants arrived in the mail today, Only probablem is i dont know what to do with it, should i just measure the ingrediants and put them in a bottle and shake it up? G'day people, I'm in a bit of a pickle. I dont know weather to buy some powerglo's or just go down to the local lighting shop and get some cheap 6500k t8 daylight tubes. After many hours of cutting into my light hood i think i can get 2 25 watt bulbs to fit as there was not enough light getting into the ends of the tank with the 2x 20 watt. Its for a planted tank and i'v been using a aqua glo and a power glo and so far the plant growth is not to bad, Also there is no co2. Here is the Kelven ratings on the back of the powerglo box: 2800k-flora glo |4200-sun glo |6700life-glo |18000k-aquaglo |18000k-powerglo All advice welcome

I just emailed the guy to see if he sold the chemicals in 500gm quantities and he said yes so that should half the price, I just replyed to see if he sells the aquaticchelated mix in 500gm quantities. The email i got was really organized and helpfull and i would reccomend them for other people wanting to make diy pmdd. http://www.hydroponics.co.nz
-
Just went and checked out the www.hydroponics.co.nz and it works out at $28.10 for 1kg of potassium nitrate and 1 kg of potassium sulfate sent to Nelson and another $28.10 on top of that for Aquaticchelated mix, would be cheaper going out and buying a years worth of lfs fertiliser, do i have to have the AquaticChelated-TE-Mix to have good working plant firtiliser?
-
Thanks for more help again BlueandKim, When i next get the chance i will make my way down to the local switched on gardener and get some chemicals lol. Think i will pass on co2 as it's to expensive as i'm still at school with many years to go unfortunatly : (. And the plants seem to be doing well with no co2 or fertalizers. The tank is about 48cm deep with about 6-7cm of gravel so i think the glosso will be fine.
-
Sorry to Hijack the thread , i dont really understand any off the chemicals or what they do, But i have 2 140L semi planted tanks and the substrate is gravel with muddy sand under it, the sand has been in another tank for about 6 months so it will probably have a lot of nutrients in it? Any reccomendations for liquid diy fertalizer and ingredients? Thanks, Joe
-
I would all so be keen on making it, its so dam exspensive at the lfs! i'm not much of a scientest (i asume that it is plant fertalizer lol) , Have you found a place in Nelson that sells the ingredients quack? I have no co2 or ground ferts lol so am about due to get some fertalizer lol

Yea the little skunk loach doesent seem to be doing the job, i see lots of emty shells around the tank but have never seen him eat a snail. Also i find the skunk loach to not be aggressive at all only sometimes he might chase the corydorys away but not often,(alot of web sites go on about how agressive they are)he just tends to mind his own bussiness watching things from the hole in the drift wood, funny little thing he is.
-
Thank you very much BlueandKim, there are so many nice people on here! Thanks for the offer alanmin4304 i will see how the stuff i got from the lake goes first. Should i separate the runners as it would make planting them a lot easier? Also how should i go about planting them into the substrate? I got them from lake rotaroa if anyone in the area wants to find them. Cheers, Joe
-
Haha, yea i also dislike them. I got there numbers right down buy baiting them with lettice and put in a skunk loach. I then had to go on holiday for 2 weeks, so i come back expecting i nice snail free tank and what do i see! Holes all threw my swords and ramshorns every where lol
-
Good to see all the interest, Just got back about 20minutes ago, i found it growing where the lake mets the river not to much of it tho, ended up just pulling it apart from the mud and oxygen wed ( to get the marjortity of them i fell in a bout 2 feet of mud : ) all good fun. The sandflies were biger than the average and we forgot repelent! I ended up with about a large handful. Here is 2 plants i took just to make sure i got the right thing? I'm not at home atm, but will get a pic of all of them and post it asap, those 2 were about 1hr out of water there, the others are in a bucket with water That would be great BlueandKim, i will pay you for them and post.
-
maybe, but i will get enuff to make a decent size carpet lol in both my tanks (if it is actually there) plus it is something to do, very nice lake down there. I have to get ready to go now , and will probably buy that potassium permanganate. Will reply later to day with my findings. Joe

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Sports/Equestr ... 075805.htm Would this be what i need? Also my dad just said we could go today, so if i got the plants to day they would have to wait about 3-4 days for the Potassium Permanganate to arrive inthe mail, would they be ok waiting in the bucket? Also how much Potassium Permanganate should i use? Thanks for the replys people
-
So where can i get potassium permanganate? I'm not much of a scientist. Do you think it will eventually establish it self after 2 weeks maybe? tank temp is about 27 degres. Thanks for the reply : )
-
G'day people, in the next week or so i'm heading down to lake rotawiti and lake rotaroa ( hrs drive from Nelson) in search of glosstigma, i'v read around the internet and apperently it grows native there(i will soon have a fancy carpet in my tank lol). Anyway my qustion is, what should i do to make sure there is no bugs or parasites in it? Thanks, Joe
-
Thanks for the replys, Sorry about not answering straight away  just wanted to see if some one else had anymore info. Anyhow i feel a lot safer about feeding my exssive ramshorns to my fish, I thought i had there numbers right down until i turned on the lights about 12 last night they were every where, eating holes into my swords! I think i will just bait them with big chunks of lettice. Thanks for all the good imput Alan and Sharn.
-
Yeah they are in the same tank as the rams/discus. I thought the same that they would be fine, but better make sure so i emailed the breeder i got them from and he...said(prevous post). I have to many snails and was planing on getting some dwarf puffers untill i found out about there attitudes to other fish
-
Hi all, This is my first post. Just got some questions, can I feed crushed small red and brown ramshorn snails to my discus and rams regularly? They seem to love it aspecially them bossy rams(have to watch they dont bloat them selfs  ) I'v asked a discus breeder about this and he said they could carry parrisites and bugs and would personally not feed them to his discus, I figured snails would be full of nutrients as they eat plenty of plants and fish food. I have googled it and many sites say to feed excess snails to fish and dwarf puffers and many loaches it them as there main diet? Well i'm kind of stumped : | Any advice would be Appreciated Thanks for your time, Joe
