The power bill for our shop is around $250-$300 per month
Includes
18 Tropical Tanks (200 watt heaters)
12 Cold Water Tanks
2 Marine Tanks with Metal Halide's skimmers, streams etc
This includes all tank and shop lighting etc
The power bill has gone up $25-$35 dollars since marine tanks have been installed
So not really that expensive to have the marines running

I use NSW but the sailinity can go up and down depending on the day
It is raining cats and dogs here so sailinity will be very low for the next week at least, so adding salt is going to be necessary

I was about to rearrange my rockwork in my tank, I think I will just add one of these and let it do the work for me

We have a Naso Tang who loves eating, pushes everyone out of the way.
We make a mixture of Shrimp, Mussels and Nori, all put in a blender then frozen into flat packs.
Break off a bit at a time
When it is fed bits of food goes everywhere through the tank so everyone gets a chance .
I dont like feeding sheets of nori, we have a customer who's tang will inhale sheets at a time (coz he doesnt want to share) he has lost one tang, he reckons he choked

Hi
Unfortunately there is no treatment available for Dropsy.
Tonic Salt can sometimes reduce the symptons also a very high vegetable based diet can help as well
I had 2 Keyhole cichlids with dropsy a while back.
Tried all sorts of other medications (Limited Choice Here In NZ Unfortunately)
Nothing worked

Have a look at this
I Use Lugols Fluid (4%) Potassium Iodide on a weekly basis, I dose 2 drops per 400 litres
This is available from your local chemist for about $15.00
One bottle will last years
Adds Iodine and Potassium Iodide
Preparation of Lugol's iodine
Dissolve 10 g of potassium iodide in 100 ml distilled water. Add 5 g of iodine after the potassium iodide is fully dissolved. Stir well until all the iodine flakes have fully dissolved.
The solution should be stored in a sealed container to prevent evaporation of iodine and loss of staining activity.
Do a google search on Reef Aquaria and Lugols

Using Deltec PF509
40 bubbles per minute, running 24/7 at the moment.
Just getting around to setting up a timer for the solenoid so it will come on for 12-14 hours

with the number of people asking the same question, im surprised no ones started up an LFS in wellington to be honest
I expect the leases in Wellington CBD would have a huge influence on anyone opening a pet store in the city area, a friend of mine owns a car audio installation bussiness around the basin area and the lease is huge
Consequently pricing would be more expensive than other stores that are out in the suburbs
We are in the process of setting up a marine area in our shop, the costs involved are quite large for a very limited (local) market, but its something I have wanted to do for quite some time.

Hi
The best way to sex your turtles are
Males have a narower (sp) shorter tail
The female is typically bigger, Tail is fatter at the base
Males have longer front claws
Leaving the eggs in the tank is a waste of time, the shells (eggs) are pourous
Hope this helps

Interesting that most of the posters suggesting streams own or work in shops, lol, sorry guys had to say it.To me the advanges are, cost (assuming you have or can get second hand pumps),
Sure if the pumps are second hand then there will be a cost saving, and more pump maintainence of course, if however the pumps are brought new then streams are the way to go.

hey Bruce when running Bio Digest should i turn my charcoal fluidizer off
I dont use carbon at all, only things I use is fibre pads, rock and salifert phosphate remover
Should be fine with carbon ( i'm sure some one will correct me if I am wrong) carbon removes (most) medications but should not affect the bacteria

Medications have to be licensed (Natural are the exceptions ie: Melafix)
MAF do have the right to either destroy or return the items to the country of origin
FYI
Licensing costs approx $3000 per item
3yr trials are done before releasing to the market (even if the product has been licensed elesewhere ie: Australia)
You can see why we do not get alot of medications here in NZ, cost of compliance is prohibitive in most cases
Heard of a guy trying to import Flea Treratment from OZ (Advantage) it was sent back to OZ by MAF

I would be interested to know where it came from, its not imported into NZ by the JBL stockists.
Sounds as though its doing the trick.
There are a number of JBL products i would like to see here in NZ but have not been introduced yet
Reef is right, the costs of registering these remedies is thousands of dollars per year.
Malkon is now a dead duck because of the cost to license

I had a sneek peek at the FX-5 a while back and it is impressive.
It can also be tuned down to handle smaller tanks as well.
Alot of the noise created by cannister filters is caused byair being trapped in the cannister. Fluval have overcome this by purging the air every few minutes.
These cannisters work extremely well on Tall tanks
Great Price as well

Looks as though the RSM 250's could be in later in the year in limited numbers. October/November possibly
It looks as though the supplier will bring in pre orders, so if you want one you will need to pre order from your local pet store
Price, they are still working on it
