  1. Hi guys! Thanks for all the advice! My water supply comes directly off the roof and I make sure the gutters are clean! Tank is only a couple of years old and I peered into the bottom of it one day (for my own peace of mind!) and its pretty clean on the bottom (No skeletons!) Ive been drinking gallons of it and I havnt turned green! :bounce: Will try to get some more plants into the tank and keep at the partial water changes and see if that helps... and tell the fish to swim closer to the glass so I can see them!
  2. Looks like I might have to start going to town and collecting tap water..... or just buy some bright coloured fish that I can see thru the gloom! Im getting to the stage where I want to abandon fish keeping!
  3. Hey there! I live in the country.... rain water is all I have! My water is always going cloudy! (greenish cloudy) Plants and fish seem to be coping ok. Am using Algie Fix to control it but it only seems to last for 3 days and its back again! Have added some more "vacum cleaners" (catfish and flying foxes) Plus putting a light cover over the tank to reduce the amount of light getting thru. The ph in the tank is between 6.6 and 6.4. Have been told it should be around 7 and the use of lime chip will help keep it steady. I am very envious of people with clear tank water!
  4. I have been having lots of trouble with the ph in my tank.. An aqua one with the internal filter. Was doing weekly water changes.. thinking I was doing the right thing.... Was not until I tested the rain water that I was using (thinking that would be fine) and discovered that the ph of that was between 6.0 and 6.4. No wonder I still kept having problems! Have been told to use lime chips to help keep the ph steady (as well as adjusting the water used in the changes) Can someone please tell me how to use the lime chips... do they go in with the filter and noodles? Or somewhere else? and do they need to be washed first (or is that defeating the purpose?) Any ideas on how to correct the PH of the fresh water that I add when doing partial water changes. Thanks heaps! :
  5. Hey! I can see my fish again!! Did a major water change last weekend and followed up with smaller ones each day this week and Wah Laa.... Visible fish! Now.... keeping it that way! Who ever said that fish were easy to look after was telling BIG PORKIES!
  6. Hi all! As you can see in a previous post I have cloudy water... Had it tested and the phosphate level was really high. Have since reduced feed and put in some "magic Filters" called Green-X which are supposed to remove all problems! (not yet!) Water was a grey cloudy and has now turned greenish cloudy and my plants are suffering. Leaves rotting off and floating all over the place and black edges and spots on remaining leaves. Lights are on from 3pm till 11pm and I do partial water changes every week What causes this?
  7. Thanks for your help folk! Had the water tested and the phosphate level was really high! Have been given some "Green -X" filters to use that will apparently "do wonders" for the state of the tank! With regards to feeding..... Is small amount twice a day the way to go or once a day? The greedy little beggars never leave anything behind and always look to be in a state of "please feed me" whenever they see me come past their tank!
  8. Thanks for the help people! I do have too many fish! but thought that with regular water changes will be managable? 1 Big fat A**hole of a Kissing Gourami 2 small spotted Gourami 2 small blue Gourami 2 Big Fat Angels 2 Albino Catfish 2 Bristlenoses 10 Neon Tetras They are fed twice a day and clean everything up, so will ignore their hungry little faces tomorrow and do another partial water change and see how we get on
  9. Hey people... what causes water to go cloudy? Has only ocurred in the last few days! I have an Aqua 1 620T tank. Do weekly partial water changes and am running on rain water. Also.... How do you "tame" an arrogant kissing Gourami! The blighter (big fat sod!) is harrasing the other inmates (blue and spotted gouramis and two angels) It is at the stage where he will be evicted shortly!!!
  10. Hi everyone! Im a newbie and I wish I had found this site earlier! It would have made my start into Tropical Fish so much easier (and cheaper!) My tank is an Aqua one 620T (The deep version  not the best of choices when you have short arms!) When I set it up I was told to put the noodles in first, then the white filter pad and then the black pad on top. Have been reading thru previous posts and found it done the other way. White pad, then noodles, then black pad. Which way is the right way for this tank? Now... with the lights....I have them set up to turn on at 3pm and go off at 11pm. Was told 8 hours was enough? Is this the best time to have them going or does it suit the fish to have it on "their timetable" - not mine! Nextly... Is it being in direct sunlight that causes the "greenies" to live on the inside of the glass and on the plants and stones or just light in general? Or is it caused by something else? Cheers!
