  1. I've had a background photo sheet on my tank for years, but since my large Oscar died and I went into smaller fishies I thought I'd try something different. I have had the wall my fish tank, is infront of, mirrored to about 120cm high, and bought artificial plant stems from $2 Shop and glued them to back of tank. It looks neat, cause I have pot plants around it. It is probably very expensive, (I have a friend in the glass trade), but you never have to paint or wallpaper there again, and is a real feature. If I knew how to post photos over here, I'd send one to show you what I mean.

    hi from kaiapoi

Welcome to the Fishy place, sorry can't help you with your Avatar, I had to get help myself and can't remember how to do it, but I'm sure one of the other kind members will help you out. :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
  3. :bounce: Just popped in to say hi and welcome, and thanks for playing our silly games, hehe.
  4. I have new Babies. Went to the fish farm and as I said the first fishy that wagged it's tail at me would win. I walked thru the door and this georgeous wee golden beast was trying to get out of its tank to come home with me. He turns out to be a baby Giant Gourami and he's gonna grow as big as my darling Oscar. I bought him a couple of Angels for friends, but still want to get a couple more, maybe a Silver Shark. I think Pete Pleco has his nose out of joint now, I put some plants is and he's already ripped them up - he's a proper wee bu...., (definitely has to be a male) haha
  5. Oh wow confusion has set in, haha. Thanks for all your great ideas, problems is I had my wee brain set on goldfish, and now all this talk of community tanks, planting, etc has got me in a real muddle. I'm off to the fishy shop tomorrow to do some looking. I'm actually now favouring Sharn's idea of a tankfull of nasties (I do like fish that will grow to a good size and with a bit of character). Don't think I'll be able to have too many plants, cause Pete Pleco is a bit of a b..... I can't wait to see what I decide, it'll all depend on what fishy's wag their tails at me I reckon. Will keep you posted
  6. Hi there, some of you will know that I have sadly just had my large Oscar put to sleep today, and now I have a problem with what can I put in with my 12" (30cm) spotty Pleco. I really don't want to get another Oscar, I used to keep them years ago and had to watch them fighting. 3 years ago I bought 4 different coloured Oscars and a Parrot Fish, after 2 years I had to give 2 Oscars to a friend as they started fighting, and then my Parrot fish and 1 Oscar got Popeye (treatment didn't save them). So now I give up after todays visit to vet. I have a large pond of goldfish, and am thinking of bringing some of the fancy ones inside (after a period of adjustment) to live in my 5ft tank with Pete Pleco. I have been reading up on other messages in here and it seems that goldfish will tolerate warm conditions. Can someone tell me what temp is the highest they will survive. I have heard Plecos can stand cooler temps - is this so? I would like to find a happy medium to keep both together and maybe even some other tropicals with them, or otherwise I'll have to find a new home for Pete. Sorry this is so long winded, but thought it best to put down as many details as poss.
  7. The horrid deed has been done. I'm very sad but also relieved that Rupert is not in anymore pain. The Vet was lovely, she gave him back to me wrapped up in a Teddybear towel with fresh cut roses on top, inside the container he went in, (as Sharn said) toThe Great Fish Pond in the Sky. A big thanks once again for all your help and kindness. You will now find me in the Beginners Forum asking for advice on what to do next. Maybe you could help.
  8. Posted a message in my hello page by mistake, so letting you all now that poor Rupert the Oscar has an appointment at the vet tomorrow. I thought he was getting better, but has gone down hill again. Thankyou for all the help - I feel like I have signed his death warrant but at least he won't be suffering anymore.

    Allo Allo

It's bad news, I thought he was on the mend. Sadly I can't stand seeing him (Rupert) suffering anymore, so we have an appointment at the vets tomorrow morning. It's gonna be sad but it's for the best I feel. Thanks for all your kind help and wishes, I'll be needing advice now on what to do with my large Pleco, I think I'll go back to cold water fish.
  10. Not sure where I'm meant to put a general message, but just wanted to say thanks to all of you nice people that have helped me, it's a great site. I like the Word Association (in the Fun section) for a bit of a giggle when you've run out of reading other things. :bounce:

Hi all, I was new in last night, but has taken me a while to find my way round (thick as a brick somethimes). I have a 5ft tank with a foot long (not Subway) Pleco and 10" Oscar who is rather sick (that's how I found my way in here. I love animals, we have a pond of great goldfish, 2 Staffys, 3 rats, and a Indian Ringneck parrot, oh - a husband and a couple of kids. Looks like a great site and so far people have been great,I think I'm gonna have a great time here. But I would really like a cute picture under my name and don't know how to get one :-?
  12. Thanks to you all for making me feel welcome. As soon as I saw your name Lindyloo I reckonised you as the person how had written the article I was looking for, thankyou. Pegasus - sorry about the lack of info on me, it took me long enough to work out how to join up (blonde hair). I have added more now. Sharn, thanks for your thoughts but you won't believe it. I sterilized a small carry tank last night with salt and threw some in his tank, and he has been swimming around all day instead of gasping at bottom of tank. I didn't have the heart to take him to vet (it's as if he knew) so I am closely watching him. Will keep you all informed
  13. Thanks Kookie for your help, but he's 10" long so might have a bit of trouble squishing him in a small bowl or cup, ha ha. If he he'd been a small fish I wouldn't be quite so attached, but he really is one of my pets.
  14. Hi I am new to this site, and was browsing last night and found a discussion on the kindest way to put fisheys to sleep. (for the life of me I can't find it now). There were many replies on Clove Oil, Benzocaine, etc - knocking him on head or freezing. I had to take one of my dogs to the Vet tonight so asked her about the above drugs. She was not happy with the Clove Oil method and others weren't available to the public. So tomorrow I am taking my Oscar (who by the way seems to have a rupture under his tummy and is not looking very well) to her and she is going to put aneasthetic in his water to gently put him to sleep. I feel happier about this and don't mind paying the vet fees. This is a great site and I can see I will have many more questions on what to put in with my 12" Pleco when he's on his own.
