    damaged fins

one of my goldfish has a damaged dorsal and caudal fin and another one has a damaged anal fin (they're just minor tears and i have no idea how they happened). should i use melafix on them?
  2. my tank is in a spare room and is out of sunlight. i notice that the water is a bit warmer in the morning but seems to cool down a bit during the day. i have a filter in the tank. there is a stick-on thermometer on the tank and the temperature is usually within the 22-26 degrees C range. also, could someone who's really good at maths please work out how many litres my tank is
  3. my tank is 50x25x30cm, not sure how many litres this is. currently there are only 2 fantails in it, both about 3.5cm long (excl. caudal fin). i do weekly partial water changes of about 15-20%. i don't have any water-testing equipment... will get some soon
  4. oh yay he is swimming around again now... but i am still concerned as I have never seen him like this before
  5. One of my goldfish (not the same one I was talking about in my swim bladder thread) is in a very idle state and I am worried there may be something wrong with it. It just sits on top of the gravel under a fake plant and stays there, making hardly any movement (the only movement is from its gills and eyes). However I gave it some food and it swam a bit, ate it and went back to its spot and stayed still again. What is wrong with it? It has been like this all day.
  6. currently my affected goldfish is on a pea-only diet, and before that I only fed him small-sized flakes
  7. also i've noticed that the fish only appears sick at night, and during the day he is perfectly normal, has good balance and doesn't hang around at the surface. is swim bladder meant to be 24/7?
  8. i read somewhere that one cause of pop-eye is tuberculosis and if this is the case it is uncurable and the fish has to be euthanized... but if its only one eye i dunno, might not be popeye at all
  9. I think one of my goldfish has something wrong with his swim bladder. He just floats around at the surface of the water, slightly leaning to one side, but isn't gasping for oxygen or anything like that. He also has some difficulty trying to 'anchor' himself to the bottom of the tank. I heard that feeding them peas could help, but please give me some more information, any help would be greatly appreciated THANKS
  10. stringy poo is a sign of constipation, means you should vary the diet a bit and add some roughage etc.
  11. could you please tell me the address of this website thanks
  12. but isn't it okay if you have enough surface area? my tank is approx. 30cm (length) x 17cm (width) = (510cm sq) surely that is enough for two fairly small fantails? of course I will be getting a bigger tank as they grow larger
  13. I had the water tested at Jansens and they said it was 'perfect'. I have got plants and gravel and a internal power filter (the one with the sponge medium). The fantails are about 3.5cm long excluding the caudal fin and my tank is 10L - is it a bit small? thanks
  14. I'm new to fishkeeping and have noticed that there is a horrible 'stale' smell in my tank, even though the water quality is good and the fish are fine. The smell returns even after doing a partial water change. Is this normal and if not, what could the problem be?

    Hi

Hello, I've only recently started keeping fish and so far have a pretty basic tank, with 2 fantails. Am planning to upgrade and get an oranda and black moor in a while, once I get some experience
