  1. Dear Reef, I guess that the beckett skimmer you have currently is from Ocean Werx. From the pictures that you've posted, my suggestion is that you still need to tune down the air intake. The bubbles created are way too large for my liking as well. Secondly, raise the water level in the skimmer. As we can all see, the skimmer is creating reasonable foaming (obviously yellowish / brownish foam awaiting to be expelled out from the neck), but the water level is set too low. You will only get dirty and muddy neck, which on the other hand is also skimmate (just much thicker, smellier and more messy) I agree that with a quick release, the collection cup can be removed easily. However, you are not required to undo all the thumbscrews to remove the collection cup. The recommendation is usually to loosen the thumbscrews and twist the collection cup. The keyhole flanges are specially designed to allow this function. As for the air vent that you've suggested, it is not really necessary. The drainage size is specifically chosen to provide sufficient allowance for the air to escape without compromising on the skimmer's performance. The whole reaction chamber of the beckett skimmer is fully utilised for extended reaction time. We had been contemplating on whether to re-design the beckett skimmer to prevent micro-bubbles from escaping. But upon weighing the pros and cons, we rather advise Ocean Werx beckett skimmer users to prepare more buffers in the sump to minimise the micro-bubbles. Really appreciate your time to do up this review and finally post some pictures as well. From the way I look at it, a porche still needs a good driver (whether or not they are ugly). PS: never knew that a BK is so cheap in NZ, or is deltec really that expensive there. In Singapore, the cheapest BK is standing at the top at around SGD$3,000 while a Deltec AP702 is only SGD$2150 or lesser. http://www.eaquanature.com Not too sure if my comparision is appropriate though.
  2. Dear Reef, The screw can be removed. Better take them away before it affects your livestock. Any pics?Thank you.
  3. Dear Mr jetskisteve, I couldn't agree more. Thank you for pointing that out. For skimmers to work optimally, the cup and neck should be cleaned regularly. This is exactly the same recommendation that we advise all our customers. The auto shut off waste collector serve mainly as a flood-preventor. At times, skimmers might craze. eg: change of filter media, topping fresh water that contains dechlorinator, water changes, etc. An auto shut off waste collector really comes in handy in times like that.
  4. Hi reef, not too sure where you got your beckett skimmer from (since you are not willing to disclose), but I suggest that you check with the manufacturer on how to tune the air intake to get the suitable bubble size for optimal skimming. Beckett skimmers are not plug and play skimmers, it requires tuning. Ferrari won't win F1 if a 18year old new driver races it. 8) I believe most of us reading your thread would really love to see some pictures rather than the usual sentence "Bubble size in the beckett still quite large compared to the Deltec". Sincerely hope that you can spare some time to snap a few shots of its performance.

    Skimmer test

Would really love to see such a comparison. Ocean Werx has never claim that our beckett skimmers are better than a deltec or worse than a deltec. We don't have the proper facilities to run such a complete, unbiased test (accompanied with lab certs). In Singapore, we also have 2 leagues of reefers who swear by their needlewheel / beckett skimmers. In my most honest opinion, each has its own advantages. http://www.sgreefclub.com/forum/index.p ... rison&st=0 The thread that was started in Sgreef club is also similar, a distributor of Deltec claiming superiority over beckett skimmers. I must admit that deltec really has very supportive distributors all around the world. All are based very much on preference. If one like and can afford a Porche / Ferrari, my advise is to get it. If you think a Japanese engine is good enough for your tank, use it. If you think a bicycle can get you from point A to point B too, why bother spending? Nonetheless, I believe everyone will be keen on seeing the comparison. However, a point to note, I guess most of us, would love an UNBIASED comparison. Cappucino anyone?
