  1. Thanks all for your feed back. I am hoping the disciplines in raising and breeding Discus will put me in good stead with marines. I think I'll go without initially and use our tap water in conjunction with phosphate removing product. If I'm not happy with the results I'll review my decision. Cheers
  2. Hi Im looking at getting into Marines after keeping discus for ages. I'm doing heaps of research but am getting various opinions as to wether RODI units are required for Chch water when doing water changes & top ups for marines. I see a few on this site are from Chch-what do you do please.
  3. Hi TGWH yes thats probably my favourite- its a Red Melon, some might say a yellow faced Red Melon. Nice to know I may have contributed to your wifes interest in ..the hobby or Discus Cheers
  4. Thanks -yes it is often difficult getting good Discus down here. I'm lucky I get to Auckland/ North Island a bit and either courier or bring them on the plane with me.
  5. Hi I wouldnt worry too much , adult Discus can and often do go on hunger strikes while they settle in. They can go for weeks without eating. The best thing you can do is ensure that you keep the water changes up and not over feed. Garry
  6. Hi I'll try these images Now thats better Cheers Garry

  11. Thanks, yes I think I'll pull it out and give it another series of cleaning just to make sure, before the fish go in. Cheers
  12. Hi Sharn, sort of, but definitely hairy clear to white fuzz look to it about 1mm high in about 5 or 6 places along the wood. When you touch it , it just disintigrates ???
  13. Yes, I'm looking at putting BN's in next week and was sort of thinking that maybe they would clean it up without harming them.
  14. I found this amazing log / driftwood on the river bank and due to it being quite long proceeded to poor boiling water over it once a day every day for 2 weeks, then scrubbed it with diluted bleach solution for a few days and rinsed thoroughly. Its in my 180 g tank now however it has developed this white fuzz type fungus in some places along its side. Does it need more treatment, could the fungus be harmful ? any ideas? I'm doing a fishless cycle at present.
  15. I was charged $20.00 min call out fee, which I was happy to pay. The guy that did the job said it was only his second aquarium , and that he knew what resin and tools to use due to it being on the inside glass.
  16. Thanks for your reply -I did end up getting a window scratch repair company around. I emptied the tank just below the scratch. He actually drilled a small hole in the scratch, caught any glass shavings on a rubber lip thing , and then filled with non toxic resin, buffed it up and the scratch totally disappeared.
  17. I had a smooth rock sitting on a large piece of driftwood to help get it to sink-well it worked because it sank some and the rock must have hit the inside of the tank leaving a small shallow but noticeable scratch mid way right in front. Its 10 mm glass and I'm wondering can I just use wet/dry sandpaper rather than some cutting paste, as I'd rather not empty the whole tank to remove the scratch.
  18. I had a 6ft x2ft x 2ft aquarium made by Redwood Aquatics $599.00

    Is tank Cycled

By the way I'm using aquarium pharmaceuticals test kits. The nitrate ones first step has a reading of 0ppm ( where my test sat) but the next step is 5.0, so perhaps I do have nitrates but doesnt register on this particular colour card. Should I be using some other test that is more accurate, or am I fine.

    Is tank Cycled

Hi, I am setting up a quarantine / grow out tank for 6-8 small Discus 160ltrs bare bottom, plastic plants. I have used part water from established tank and part fresh with added cycle. I soaked filter cartridges in established tank as well as putting some gravel from this tank in the new filter which is an internal Fluval. The new tank has been going for 5 days the last 2 days with two goldfish-that are doing fine. I have kept temp at 65 for them but will raise this for the Discus. The ph is 6.8, ammonia reads 0, nitite reads 0, nitrate reads 0. My question is-has the tank cycled this quickly ? or are things going to go pear shaped, say next week. Should I wait longer or is it ready. your thoughts
