Hi there. I live in Auckland. I'm new to fishkeeping. Set up a 125 litre tank about 9 weeks ago. Did everything by the book and with advice from Jansens. Everything going very well. Aquarium cycling as it should, introduced fish slowly. Living happily were 2 dwarf cobalt gourami, 2 bristle nosed cats, 6 clown loaches and 14 neon tetras. Noted white spot on clown loach late last Saturday afternoon (within a few days of purchaseof 3 of them). Don't have a hospital tank so couldn't do anything until the following morning when 3 other clowns had spots. Was sold White Spot Cure, told to increase temperature, measure drops carefully, allow for displacement of stuff in aquarium, halve food supply. Was assured it would not damage the beneficial bacteria in filter that is just getting established.
I DIDN"T KNOW ABOUT THIS WEBSITE AT THIS STAGE!
 To cut a long sad story short, all the fish have died except for the gouramis who are looking sad and sick. The filter also has no nitrates. I rang Jansens who think the White Spot Cure was toxic as they lost a big display tank filled with discus etc using the same batch number. They are negotiating with the supplier and said they will replace my fish.
I didn't feel so useless given this information - was ready to give up the whole idea.
The problem now is I have just noticed, on one of the gouramis, what the book I have says is gill flukes - help! :-?
Can this be cured - what with?
Is it contagious?
Should I dismantle the tank and start again?
The water today is good , have been doing frequent small water changes and put charcoal in the filter a few days ago. No ammonia, pH 7.2, no nitrites, no nitrates, temp now 24.
Not adding anything to the water at the moment due to charcoal
Any advice would be VERY welcome
My plan -
buy small second tank and treat the sick gourami
continue to monitor the water in the main tank
wait a week before I get any more fish - grieving time!
never put fish in tank without a quarantine period
Feel embarrassed as everyone on this site seems so well informed about all these things but I'm desperate and ready to throw it all away. Except that I was enjoying it soooo much Plus you all sound like a friendly bunch.
I await your pearls of wisdom.....
