Algae issue and new fish

Recommended Posts

Hi there! I'm new to freshwater tropical fish keeping and I've been in the process of cycling my tank. I currently have a golden apple snail and a mountain minnow from my old tank (I was told that the minnow would be ok in the warmer temperatures?). I have been having issues with bright green algae growth - the picture attached is only 5 days after I cleaned the glass! I'm not sure if this is normal or not? Also, any advice for what tropical fish would be suitable for my 38L tank once my water is ready would be great! (38L, tropical, 1 apple snail, 1 mountain minnow) Thanks!!

The green algae you have is normally caused by too much sunlight (direct or indirect) hitting the tank or being reflected on to it.  However algae needs excess nutrients to feed on as well so it would pay to feed very little to the one fish you have.

Also, did you know apple snails feed on tank plants?

Your tank is very nicely laid out :)

The tank layout does look nice but I am concerned the plants in there may not be aquatic. Of course, if they are actually synthetic then it isn't a problem :-)

Minnows are fine in both cold and tropical tanks.

Keep to a few small fish for an aquarium of that size. I always suggest people get more of one species rather than a few of several species. Get more minnows. Good starter fish would be guppies, platys, any of the small tetras, rasboras and a couple of ancistrus for the bottom level, or 3 small corydoras.
