Blue Fantail and Lionshead - diseased?

Hi there,

My blue fantail, below, has had a fin condition for the past couple of months - can someone please give me some ideas on what it is and how to sort it out? I have given her 2x 7 day treatments with Pimafix (2.5ml per 20L) and Melafix (2.5ml per 20L) combination but it doesn't seem to be clearing it. Should I be treating her for longer? I also have Wunder tonic but have not used it on her.

I was also hoping someone would be able to view the white growth on my Lionshead (below)and tell me if it's normal. I believe they are related to Orandas and this could be normal.

Also, can someone tell me how to show images in a post!

Thanks a lot!!

Wundertonic is good, but if it is a fungus infection the I would look more seriously at your water quality, pimafix should have dealt with the fungal infection easily. if the water quality is up, the fishes immune system would have dealt with it. if you have a quarantine tank I would use it with a salt treatment. (approx 1g salt per Liter),

what are the fish living in atm, what are the water params, it is possible that by using a broad spectrum antibiotic such as melafix you may have killed of many of the benficial bacteria in you system causing the water quality to fall even further

It is always hard to diagnose from pictures. Fungal infections are normally opertunistic and will arise after injury or bacterial infection so you could be dealing with more than one problem. Saddleback (mouth fungus) can also look like fungus. I would treat with wunder tonic or furan 2 as it will treat a range of problems. Treat the whole tank.

Hi Alan and F15hguy,

Thank you for your responses. I have 9 fairly large fish (comets, blue fantail, calico fantail, white fantail, Lionshead, oranda shubunkn) in a 700L pond in CHCH. I have never had an issue with water quality (over last 2 years) but I have to admit that I stopped checking as it has always been perfect (I do a water change fairly often and have an excellent filtration system). My bluey is the only one who has been affected so I don't think it is related to poor water quality but I will get the water tested tomorrow and let you know the parameters.

F15hguy - I treated bluey in a quarantine tank so melafix hasn't been near the main filter.

Again, thanks for your time, I'll post tomorrow the water paras and will treat the whole tank with wunder tonic.

Cheers!

Not heavily planted.

I have a water iris and lily which have been pretty quiet over winter. The pond is pretty large for 9 fish and it's been topped up a lot recently - my waterfall has a slow leak which prompts me to regularly add fresh water - ingenious, I know! And we've had a lot of rain recently... Perhaps that explains it?
