  1. yeah man, web site very cool... so long as you have dsl i thought you were straight dude?
  2. I am lost :-? reminds me of a movie i once saw 8) excuse my ignorance but how does this work?
  3. so the non-UV-maimed / non-zapped bacteria are smart enough to avoid the skimmer?
  4. i dont. but dont know enough about them to make an informed decision whether they're worth while or not. just because a greater percentage dont, doesnt mean they're not worth using!
  5. very much so. i can show you a photo of the "white" sand i took out of my tank if you like
  6. i would use both - assuming the first is proper coral sand and not off the local beach mix them together then cure it over a couple of months. i have larger granules and dont rate it at all, you get NO life in it. just taken the larger out of my display - there is NOTHING in it at all. in the refugium its a mix of large and fine and does have plenty of life.

    Clam cleaning

??? common sense? put a plastic bucket under the water and put the clam in it. scrub it in the container then tip the container out when done.

    Clam cleaning

personally i wouldnt remove it. i dont think it would do it any harm to leave it in the tank and clean the shell though.
  9. cool. great progress. bit of rowaphos to remove the last bit of nutrients to stop feeding that hair algae and you will be set. looks like a baby majarno in the last shot
  10. cheers, but im not that happy with it at the mo! just taken all the sand out of the display as it's mega-dirty. hoping thats gonna help with some colour

    KP's Tank Pics

coming along well! no offence but whatever it is it looks ugly plus manual says you have to clean regularly, fine tolerances for the covers and the amount of water they intake. can effect/wear out motor quicker if flow in is restricted. you'd be better off dialing them down (if controllable)
  12. so got any pic's of your old tank?
  13. well the nsw vs asv would probably be right, not sure about the % water changes
  14. From those that posted (less 2 who did not provide all information ) results are: 65% use NSW, 35% use ASW Average water change is 17.7% every 2.7 weeks
  15. very common here as corals are relatively expensive from shops. all depends on whether you want something smaller/cheaper and watch it grow or fork out now and get something larger. as of late i've been opting for larger acro's. dont believe it's based on garlic. i use it with great success. only 2 persistant aipstasia left  general consensus seems to be that they're ok as long as they dont get too large. i see no problem with them
  16. at least the publicity he got would have probably paid for the surgery
  17. cool, pity you can't work out what level of nutrients were exported from the skimmate. weight doesn't count for anything unfortunately (so i've read)
  18. I Duncan? Has he changed his name to Iayton?
  19. age of skimmers? why not run both simultaneously - more accurate result.
  20. personally i wouldnt do either of the above. i would cook them for around 6 weeks first. if they were in a tank for several years, there will still be a heap of crud in them which you need to get out and have them nice and porous again. after you've cooked for around 6 weeks chuck them in the sump. that will get the nitrifying bacteria populations built up without the unwanted algae growth. then chuck in the display.
