Adrienne got a reaction from Silverdollarboy2 in And so it begins - a year on update 26/2/17
Time for an update.  Yesterday I added the final two fish to this tank - it has taken me since the beginning of last year to source (at the same time) a powder blue tang and a yellow tang which were the last two fish to be added and needed to be added together.
    Final stocking -
    pair of Picasso Clowns
    Lawnmower Blenny
    Chromis x 2
    Copperband Butterfly
    Schooling Bannerfish (False Idol)
    Foxface (Lo) Rabbitfish
    Blue Tang
    Powder Blue Tang
    Yellow Tang
Corals are still a work in progress

    Thanks for all the info.
NO2- (nitrite) - if you have any nitrite then it will be too much and will be 'burning' the 'skin' on the fish and damaging the gills eventually causing death.  Your NO3- (nitrate) is also a little high.
I suspect that the feeding is too much - once a day is sufficient or even once a day six days a week.  You could cut down on the pellets too as the waste will sink into the substrate.  The size of a fish stomach is approx. the same size as their eye.  Too much food, too much waste and your filter may be struggling to cope with it.  If ammonia or nitrite are present the fish will be coming up nearer the surface of the tank looking for more 'air' and the surface movement (gas exchange) will be providing better conditions for them.  Cutting down on the feeding will also be better for your wallet
Rainbows are very active fish normally, they like plenty of swimming space so having them 'hang' is not ideal.  They also have very tiny throats and require micro pellet sized food.
Where to from here - I would hold back on adding any more medications to the tank and work on the water quality.  First up - to reduce the nitrite to 0 by a decent sized water change - 30 - 50% and then test again.  If still showing nitrite continue with daily changes of around 20% and if you do have any prime available add that to neutralise the nitrite.  Prime, while neutralising the effect of nitrite will still show a reading for it, so continue until the reading shows 0.  These water changes should also assist with the nitrate readings reducing.  Once your tank has shown 0 then reduce the water changes to 10% every couple of days for around 6 days and then stop and return to your usual maintenance.
Hopefully this will stop the fish deaths.

2 weeks of planting and it's now full.
Was going for a loose Asian biotope but ruined it with some Ludwigia..
Plants are all low care easy growing: polyaperma, Ludwigia repens, Indian fern, tiger lotus, Wendtii crypts and windelov.
Wood is sinking but only just. Give it half a chance and it pops up. Hence after WC today the polyaperma looks a bit sad after being collected by a piece of wood uprooting.
Removed the purigen and ready to start adding fish.

I may be a little late commenting.  Furan2 also carries a warning hazard in that it is known to cause cancer in mice.  Please wear gloves when handling and putting your hands/arm in the tank.

Amazing this is still on the first page from a year ago!  Anyway, I decided to go with a real pine tree and it was fabulous to have that again.  We have one set up at work and the smell is just wonderful.  I'm going to get another pine tree this year and will pick one up this weekend.  I just need to get over my hay fever first.....

Great effort   A few years back I was given a male molly from the hunt as it kept breeding with the person who caught it guppies.  Weird looking fry they were too.

I have a little less than 20 of these now. I'm really happy with them. I have never kept any rainbowfish before so its really interesting to observe their behavior.

Never mind she definitely doesn't want a tank that size in the lounge so I have to go with the 180 x 80 x 70 tank. Do you know what the cost would be to remove my window and then get it reinstalled, if it's not to expensive I might go with the larger tank

i've kept them.  I like them as much as I like Sterbai, which is a lot!  Peppered cory leave me cold.  Found Julii were relatively slow growing in comparison to Sterbai.

Today I had my first attempting at fragging my frogspawn coral due to its size - much to the horror of my Picasso clowns who host the coral    Here are a few pics for those interested in marine tanks.
More fragging is required over the next week or so as I want to add more zoa to this particular tank.
    Whole tank shot

Where has the rest of my home gone to?

Adrienne reacted to zombieworm in Elephantnose
The other day I saw Elephant nose fish advertised at a different place than I have bought all my others from, and they were substantially cheaper than my others cost, so I thought I would go ahead and get a couple - out of curiosity over the low price as much as anything, and because with all but one of the discus now gone, there would be room in the tank for another two EN. I wasn't sure what to expect, so I waited with anticipation for them to arrive.
And arrive they did - healthy, active... and teeny tiny itsy bitsy, coming in at just 1" (2.5cm) I didnt know they came that small! The congo tetra youngsters I got the same time were the same size, maybe even a little bit bigger.  All my others are between 5" and 7", with Jack - the baby of the group - at a "tiny" 3 1/2".
Like Africa, the African tank is WAY to dangerous for them (OK, so it's only African above the ground level, the plecos and bottom-hugging catfish are all South American). They like hanging around the surface floating plants, but in the tank the African Butterfly fish would quickly make a meal of them. If they decided to hang around the bottom instead, there are 2 spotted dorydids, and 2 chocolate striped dorydids that would find them a delectable snack. And if they managed to avoid the top and bottom of the tank, once the lights go out there is 7 inches (18cm) of Featherfin Sydontis that cruises back and forth through the middle like a hungry shark. I currently have them in a breeding net in the African tank until I decide what to do with them.
They are just sooo adorable though! The brine shrimp and bloodworms are to big for them, so I am feeding them frozen daphne (luckily I had some on hand). They also seem really keen on the Hikuri Gold Discus pellets, so I might see if I can get some even smaller pellets for them, as those are a little big for them at the moment.
