The bigger the better when doing salt water, you will need to upgrade  it later.
    this is good reading

Cheers, I keep it looking clean as possible without algae build up. Apart from diatoms on the glass there is no algae to speak of, which I am happy about.
Convicts are underrated, females are the nicest imo and they have value as an interesting dither fish without inflicting damage.

    Hi all,
New to the forum – all though I have been reading in the forum for the last few years.
My family and I are living up in Kerikeri and recently started our second fresh water tank. Our first tank was a Juwel 200L community tank.
When my work situation permits I always want to try a marine setup as well, so when we decided to upgrade our fresh water tank we invested in a Red Sea Reefer 250. That in itself was a bit of a challenge as only one importer in New Zealand (Living Reef in ChCH). The first tank arrived to the country in Nov 2016, but unfortunately was on the train that was hit by the Kaikoura earthquake.
I finally got my tank in March and an absolutely joy to setup such a piece of high quality tank. It’s rimless tank with max capacity of 204 L and with a build in 40L sump.
From my previous experience I found it a hassle working with canister filters etc. And always wanted a simpler setup and easier to do maintenance – hence why I wanted a tank with build in sump.
I don’t have that much fish keeping experience, mainly from my childhood where my whole family back in Denmark had tanks.
Our 4 year old daughter really wanted some colourful fish so we decided on an African cichlid tank.
Anyway below are our setup and some photos.
    204L tank with 40L sump
    Eheim Compact +3000 return pump
Koralia wave maker in main tank
De Bary UV (running around 750 L/hr flow rate)
2 Al Prime Led (these are great and can be controlled wireless from an App)
Approx 3L bio material (matrix + ceramic noodles) in a homemade filter basket in sump
Decoration is cichlid stones with fake silk plants
PH 8.3 and Alk 8-9 dKH
For testing I am using Salifert products and a Hanna ammonia checker
For feeding I am using Hikari cichlid pellets as well as a Nori blended with small amount of dry shrimps.
    Water:
We are on rain water tank (plastic tanks). I have a 3 staged + UV filtration on this + a filter basket at inlet into rain water tank with limestone chips and Akdolit (burned limestones granulates). The lime helps to increase the PH from around 5.5 to around 7.3. I am quite obsessed with having clean water for my house hold and I don’t think it’s healthy for either human consumption or your water heater with acid rain water...
Anyway to help increase the PH further and buffer the water I am using Seachem products.
The tank has been doing a fishless cycle for around 2 months and so far it appears to have a decent amount of bacteria’s.
We recently got or fish (all bought at the same time) and all juvenile:
    12 yellow labs
    1 Demasoni
    1 Dragon blood peacok
    1 Butterfly peacock
So far we are enjoying the tank and my daughter has already named all the fish. The blue fish got the name “Danger”, which is probably appropriately!
Anyway just wanted to introduce our tank and I am sure I will have question as we go forward. This is our first time having African cichlids.

    Brgds Lasse

These fish are very difficult to keep alive much less successfully raise fry from.  They require optimum tank conditions - hence the price.

I know this sounds negative but have been there and done that too.  Often once you start to supply a retailer your wings are clipped so you can not sell to the general public and in the cases of more difficult to breed/grow out fish you end up with a glut that the store doesn't want due to low demand in the stores at the time.  It really is a catch 22 situation.  If you want to build a relationship with the stores you need to do it months and months before you approach the 'would you be interested question'.  They are more likely to approach you themselves if they see what you have available is top quality and then they will push for the absolute cheapest.  The bread and butter fish are cheap as chips to purchase from the main wholesalers and the likes of Animates now have their own import facilities.

Cichlids are notorious for cross breeding and albino generally refers to the pink pigment ie eyes and or skin colour being pinkish.  Yours looks more like an albino peacock than electric yellow.  Anyway good luck with the sale.

If you are going to do corals you will need to establish a good reputation within the smallish, dedicated,  group of marine keepers throughout the country.  From experience there are no fishkeepers as likely to kick up a stink as marine owners (note - I am one of them).  There are already at several people with great reputations who frag and sell through the facebook group and trademe, who sell at good prices compared to the shops so do your homework
In the fishkeeping community, reputation is everything.
NB tempered glass I believe can not be cut.

Thanks. I poured it over the main couple of patches. I don't have a syringe on hand though. The tank contains dwarf neon rainbowfish, neon tetras, corydoras, and bristlenose plecos. Also I just noticed the bristlenose had bred, so a whole bunch of the fish are teeny tiny plecos.

These are some of my guys. I have 3 setups. The 600 litre, the 300, and the 240. Mainly all central American cichlids with a few catfish and swordtails thrown in the mix. All up though I have a jack dempsey pair, a Cuban, convicts, tbars, a rogue blue acara, banjos cats, spotted Rapheal catfish, a Whiptail, and a few plecos. I tend to keep pretty quiet on forums these days whether it's this one or Facebook but would be good to see a few new posts for sure!

What size and brand is your 'small' filter?  You might be surprised as sometimes small filters are pretty powerful.

I wouldn't add biological supplements. Your problem has been biological overload from too many bacteria. Your biological load from that small number of fish will be low and will be the actual load from your actual fish. This will then culture the actual bacteria your tank requires (so long as you give up overfeeding).

What are your tank parameters ie ammonia, nitrite, nitrate?  There may also have been a small ammonia spike created and adding a form of oxygen displacement will have also helped.
FYI - a fish's stomach is the size of its eye so that is how little they need.
Water changes will become your friend - if in doubt what is happening and you don't know what to do - do a water change while help arrives
