Put in your filtration and tank size, and it can either suggest suitable species and stocking levels, or tell you if you have adequate filtration, whether your fish are actually too small for the tank etc...

I am writing a fieldguide on freshwater fish in NZ and currently working on the Poeciliid section (gambusia, guppies, mollies, swordtails, leopardfish. Got a few questions.

Known distributions. This is what the scientists know, but aquarists are more likely to know others!

Guppies - around Reparoa, north of Taupo (Waihunuhunu, Kawaunui and Waiotapu streams)

Mollies - Tokaanu/Waihi wetland south of Lake Taupo

Swordtails - only Waipahihi Stream, Taupo (probably extinct)

Leopardfish - scientists know of one site in Kamo, Whangarei, but you guys have told me about sites in Western Springs (Auckland), Wellington, and Ohauiti, Tauranga (near old tropical fish farm).

The Waipahihi Stream in Taupo is an interesting site, having had guppies, swordtails and mollies. From my reading I *think* this is the history, but I would love it if someone could confirm this:

1. guppies and mollies present

2. circa 40 years ago developments changed the temperature and they both went extinct

3. mollies then introduced at the Tokaanu/Waihi wetland south of Lake Taupo

4. swordtails introduced to Waipahihi Stream

5. further developments in recent years cooled the stream and swordtails are probably extinct.

Are there any other freshwater aquarium fish species (apart from goldfish and koi) that are in the wild in NZ? What about white cloud mountain minnows? Surely they are around!

Some people might worry about mentioning sites in case MAF or whoever they are now go and eradicate them. The reality is the above species are confined to geothermally warmed water and cannot spread, or are not confined but haven't spread, thus are a local curiosity and to be honest no one really cares that they are there. However it is important that other new species are known about in the wild, so it can be checked to see if there is a potentially major threat. In which case they might be eradicated (though sadly this is usually really difficult in practise) and you can take the credit for saving the country from the next water-weasel

I just noticed that my clown loaches have white spots all over their bodies and tails as well... I am just wondering whether it is an infection of some sort? All my other fishes are fine... the clown loaches are also fine... just saw the spots earlier...

The thing is... the clown loaches keep rubbing their bodies against rocks I have in the tank... they turn their bodies sideways and wiggle on the rocks as if to scratch themselves... so I am thinking the white markings on them are from them scratching themselves on the rocks...

what do you guys think? should I add salt to the tank?

	Hi all,

New to the world of fish and aquariums and I'm currently putting together my first Betta tank.

Ive been searching for information on seiryu stone in tanks but I've had a lot of conflicting information including information from the local animates.

Has anyone used seiryu in their tanks with betta without any issues?

I don't mind doing water changes to keep the hard water level down but would appreciate anyone with experience doing so successfully.

Or should I just give up on the stone and use it for something else?

	Hey everyone,

I've been pondering an interesting question lately: Do trout eat frogs? It's a topic that seems to stir up some debate among anglers and nature enthusiasts.

While trout are well-known for their voracious appetites and diverse diets, including insects, crustaceans, and smaller fish, the idea of them preying on amphibians like frogs seems plausible yet intriguing.

Some argue that trout may indeed consume frogs opportunistically, especially in habitats where both species coexist.

Others suggest that due to differences in habitat preference and behavior, such interactions might be rare.

I'd love to hear your thoughts and any experiences you've had regarding this curious topic!

	Hi There,

I'm going to set up a 366L tank (122Lx50Wx60H). I was wondering are the bottom tank stock okay for the tank size or would it be overstock. If it might be to small for the below, wonder how many L would be recommended.

I've got a Aqua One Ocellaris 3000 UVC Canister Filter

	4x Discus

40x Corydoras (mix of sterbei, similes)

	10x Rammynose

	2x blue phantom pleco

2 days ago I found out that one of my neon tetras was missing an eye but today when I was watching them eat I saw that another of my neon tetras now lost and eye. i had just got my tank on the 16/11/2023 and am new to the concept of caring for fish. I have 14 neon tetras in the tank, two glowlight tetras and 3 bristlenose catfish. Can someone explain why my 2 neon tetras lost there eyes and if there is a way to prevent it thanks

	Hi members,

I've been approved by the wife to have a new 600l tank! I currently have a 400l with bosemani rainbows, cichlids, loaches, an eel and a bristlenose. I don't want to re-home my fish, just have someone care for them while I get their new tank set up.

The location of the 400 is where my new 600 is going to be. I need to shut down my 400 and set up the new tank when it arrives.

My problem is I need to "board" my fish babies somewhere. I have no where to put the 400 while I set up the 600 and I need the filter from the old tank for the new one.

Any help would be massively appreciated!

	Michelle

Hey guys, I was looking to see if anyone has any experience using cheaper alternatives to the aquatic soils available from pet shops. I have run across this article that uses organic potting mixes, but I was looking at pond soils. They are safe for fish, have all the basic needs of a substrate, and the main issue people at the store said I would run into is cloudy water as the dirt becomes mud and gets kicked up by the digging fish. I was wondering if I could fill filter socks or pond pump covers with the soil, and put it in the higher parts of the tank with a sand cap, so the plants can get in, but it is contained in case of any curious fish. Advice and anecdotes are welcome, I just cant justify to fill a 200L with fluorite or aquasoil if there is a cheaper (even if slower) alternative.
