I tested my water about 7 days ago an everything was perfect, tested again last night and my ammonia had bounced up.

I moved him into a hospital tank within a couple hours an treated with tonic.

This morning when I checked him it was way worse, the end of his body was abit patchy and fins more deteriorated.

We are new to this forum and are looking for your advice and wisdom please.

About a year ago we bought a 240 litre tank that came with a variety of fish. We lost a couple of the older fish at the end of last year. Early this year we purchased two Pearl Gouramis from a reputable supply. About 5 weeks ago, one of the Pearls developed a lump on its side that then turned into an ulcer looking wound. It died a couple of days later. Our second Pearl then started to not eat as much, not be as active and staying at the top of the water. We did a water change and planted some new plants and following that the Pearl changed colour. We presumed due to stress. It is only the front half of the Pearl that has changed colour. It is now about 10 days since it changed colour and it is still alive but still not eating and staying at the top of the water level. Today, we are concerned that our big Red Rainbow is sick as well as it is not as active, is not eating like normal and has turned a very dark colour.

I tried researching the unusual Pearl colour change and could only find one reference to it and it indicated that it may be iridovirus.

Our water tests are all ok.

I have attached two photos of the Pearl with the lump and two photos of the current Pearl with the colour change.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Have been keeping fish for just a few years, and this has been a bit overwhelming for my first disease outbreak.

Still don't know what caused it, no new fish had been introduced and there was no nitrogen buildup. One of my fish must've been incubating it for some time. Their were no signs of illness or lethargy, no ulcers, so we were checking for heater malfunctions, pH fluctuations, pretty much everything else. It was only when one of the larger fish got a crooked spine we worked it out, diagnosis was confirmed by professional biopsy.

There's only really cleanup left to do now. Have a fish-less display and hospital tank full of Mycobacterium water. Does anyone know best way to sterilize the tank, and safely dispose of substrate and plants? It's going to be important not to release it into the environment, there is a nearby frog breeding area and would like to protect it from introduced infections.

Hi everyone, I'd just like to start by saying this is not my fish, it belongs to a client and they have come to me for help.

Goldie is about 18cm and lives in a 65L tank alone, I am unsure of her age. She was rescued from a pond which had dried up a few years ago when she was much smaller. I am trying to obtain a sample of water to test, currently the owner is doing approx 1/4 water changes every few days. There is a filter which has not had much maintenance in some time. Goldie is active and has a big appetite but gets very stressed with disruption to the tank.

I was sent the following photos of the growth, but I am not sure what advise to give her. It started with a swollen gill plate. The tail pic shows a slight red streak which may or may not be related.

I assume this could be caused by water quality or by an infection, can anyone enlighten me? Is this reversible or improvable? What is it?

	Kia ora,

Me with yet again another fish issue.

One of my X-Ray tetras has white spots on both its eyes and is acting a little odd.
https://ibb.co/bNQzsQ6

I know that ich is white spots but usually that covers the body or starts on the gills right? From my post history you can see I lost another X-Ray a little while ago to a different illness, but it did not have white spots on its eyes.

But while I’m here I’d like some more general advice: this is about the third or so illness in a few months and I’m not sure what’s going on. I do 30% water changes every week, I vacuum the gravel every few weeks, I have a high quality diet etc, I test the water regularly and have a planted tank. Is there anything I’m doing wrong?

Yesterday I had to put a gold barb down because it had been manically swimming at the top of the tank for a month or so without eating, I can upload video if anyone is interested. It was not swim bladder, seemed to be something else? It feels like my fish get illnesses that don’t spread, all with different symptoms, so I’m a little stumped.

I have run a praziquantel cycle and then a week after it finished and I did several water changes I ran a week course of Melafix.

Any advice would be great because losing fish regularly is becoming quite upsetting.

Sorry for the long post ?

	Kia ora,

Woke up this morning and my X-Ray Tetra has issues swimming and is spinning around as can be seen in the below video:

Checked the water and nothing out of the ordinary: 0 Ammonia, 20ppm Nitrate, 0 Nitrite, 7.4 pH. We've had these X-Rays for about 14 months so they're not new.

Only recent change to the tank has been adding 3 baby Gold Barbs from Hollywood Fish Farm about 2 weeks ago.

I have Melafix on hand but I've never used it before and unsure if this is the right treatment. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a fish that’s essentially lying and swimming on it’s side that looks slightly bent, making me think it’s an air bubble pulling it up, so it sounds like swim bladder issues? It still swims around when it has to, but it’s generally just lying there.

I’ve fed it peas the last two days but I was wondering if anybody has experienced this or if there’s anything else I could do to help it apart from feeding the peas?

Thanks in advance. I can post videos if anyone needs a look.

Have been out of the fish keeping for about five years, but just got back into it last year.

I have a neon rainbowfish that I've just noticed has an odd discolouration at the base of its tail, its on both sides. To me it sort of looks like a dark pimple? I'm guessing maybe a parasite or worm? Any ideas? I've attached the best photo I could get.

Hi guys. Not sure what this is, but it's definately not poop. Wasn't there yesterday but he's been acting a bit sad for the last few days. I've had him about 9 mths now. I feed him only NLS pellets. He doesn't seem too interested on frozen bloodworms or frozen brine shrimp. No use giving him peas either to clear the blockage as I've tried that before and only end up picking out bits of fluffy peas a few days later. He does like to eat his tank mates small fish version of the NLS though (0.5mm pelets)

	Hi,

I have a 57l tank (fluval flex) with two neon tetras, five (now four) Rosie barbs (3 male, 2 female) and two Mystery Snails. I suspect the neons think they are rosy barbs. We got the Rosies about five or six weeks ago. They are our newest addition. Before they arrived, we lost a few neons to "loopiness" (erratic swimming and the inability to stay upright, then they die). But the remaining few cheered up considerably when the Rosy Barbs arrived and seem healthier than ever.

One of the male Rosies started looking very skinny and his eyes were bulging. He has since died. Another male rosy is also looking quite pale and thin, but not as bad as the first (yet). The third male rosy looks spectacular. Very rosy. Not skinny at all. The females are suspicious round and I wonder if they are carrying eggs.

Is this normal for spawning time or is it stress or a disease of some kind?

	How can I tell?

We don't have a quarantine tank, unfortunately.

	Hey there,

About 3 days ago I noticed my black neon had a prolapse and had a protrusion under her vent. I used some Methylene blue and Epsom salt to help, after 2 days she expelled a few eggs and a day after she has a triangle-shaped hole under her vent. She doesn't appear to be stressed but not sure if I should euthanize her. I have also used Stress Guard from Seachem as an antiseptic.

All the fish are usually friendly, the rasboras, black neon and neon tetras are always schooling together, the Dalmatian mollies are very friendly and show no signs of aggression towards other fish. The snails, corys and loach mind their own business at the bottom and are very peaceful.

Hi so we've got whitespot in two of our tanks! We went down to the lfs and all they had was the wunder white spot cure, and the owners of the place weren't there to ask about it, there was a lady there but she didn't know much about fish. We hav Neon and Black Neon Tetras, Platys, Guppy and b/n's. We also have 3 baby platys that are a couple of days old and 1 that is about 2 months old. Will this stuff be ok for the babies or should we treat them seperatly with half the dosage? (1ml per 20 L, 3 days later 1ml per 40 L, it has 0.2% malachite green, 0.025% acriflavine, 0.02% quinine in aqueous solution).

We also have live plants, will they be able to tolorate this stuff?

One of my guppies developed symptoms of a parasite infection- weight loss, pale colour and white stringy feces. I treated him with 2x doses of Drontal and he improved, but now has developed a cavity in his face that looks like a small crater and matches photos of hole in the head disease. I read the recommended treatment is metronidazole, but I understand this is not available in NZ. Does anyone have any other suggestions for how to treat him?

Hi. We have had this Hillstream Loach for a couple of weeks and she has developed these large bubbles on each side with growths or misshapen lumps/bubbles in front of those. Can anyone advise what we should do?

We've googled and read about gas bubble disease, how do we know if these are gas or fluid-filled?

We've tested the water and that seems fine. We have another Hillstream Loach and he's fine and 6 glowlight tetras who seem fine.

We have an Aqua One EcoStyle 61 tank.

I have tried treating for the usual suspects fungi and bacteria and there’s been no visible change. What else is there that could produce a blotch type result?

Let me know your thoughts as I’m stumped.

	Cheers

Hi everyone! Here hoping to find some experiences using Furan 2. I am at day 3 dosing this medication as indicated by Hollywood Fish Farm, my big question is how were the fish reacting to it?. I have adults guppies and as soon as I did treatment 3 most of them started swimming erratically, not sure what to do now, if wait to see or try to do a water change to dilute somehow the medicine concentration.

	I'd appreciate your advise!

	Hi everyone,

I keep a number of fishtanks and have 12 years experience keeping & breeding tropical fish. About two weeks ago, over a 5 day period I lost several plecos, tetras and kuli loaches and a very large old yoyo loach and I suspect poisoning from pet store supplied aquarium wood.

All the parameters of the tank were fine and my other tanks are all fine as well so I can only point to the new piece of aquarium wood I had recently added to the tank.

The other fish who do not eat or live on/around the wood do not seem to have been as seriously affected but I had three baby angel fish that were unwell and perked up as soon as I moved them to another tank.

I am looking for someone who can help me confirm whether or not this particular piece of aquarium wood is toxic - I have never had this happen before but this was a particularly large piece of wood and the staff at the chain store I bought the wood said that it was imported and so fumigated during the import process(!?!)

I always soak the wood and boil it if possible but this piece was too large to boil. Additionally most of the fish that have been affected are wood eaters. The others are the smaller members of the tank - and so maybe less robust.

I have saved some of the dead fish and they are in the freezer, and obviously have removed the wood from the tank, added carbon and done multiple water changes in an effort to mitigate whatever poison is remaining in the tank. The Australian Rainbow fish today seem fine. I have a handful of more robust plecos still in the tank but will move as many as possible as they don't seem to be recovering as quickly as I would like.

I would like to get to the bottom of this as if it is the wood I need to make the fishkeeping community as well as the petstores aware so that other fishkeepers do not have such an upsetting experience.

I've talked to someone in the biology department at Victoria too, in case there is someone there that can help with toxicology, or perhaps necropsy.

Since removing the wood, doing multiple water changes and adding fresh carbon, the remaining fish have all recovered and are doing fine.

	Any ideas?
