  1. So I haven't kept fish in a few years, but last weekend I got a new tank. It's fishless cycling now - going pretty quickly, actually, even though I'm very suspicious about bacteria in a bottle! It has a built in internal sump filter, and I also got an eheim pickup 200 (that fits in the sump) because I never trust built in filters. This is going to be a well planted tank (I'll probably get a second LED light for it) and I'm open to running CO2. The tank won't be ready for fish for a while, but I've worked through 2 options for stocking: Option 1: 20 cardinal tetras 1 betta (either a chill dude, or a female) 6-8 kuhli loaches 6-8 julii cories (or other cories) 1 starlight bristlenose (or a standard, maybe) Option 1 would be pretty heavily stocked, but I'm well filtered and will have lots of hidey holes. Option 2: 6-8 otocinclus 3-6 dwarf puffers I've kept dwarf puffers before, and I love them so much. So - option 1 is basically a bright, heavily stocked tank. Option 2 is a few interesting fish, but the tank will basically look empty. I'm really torn, and thought I had decided on option 1, then went to a fish shop today for a KH/GH test and they had dwarf puffs there. Thoughts?
  2. I'm a week into cycling a new tank and I'd love some filter media/substrate from an established tank to help kick start the cycling process. Will collect, of course - ideally Wellington city but Porirua/Hutt fine also.
  3. I've had no power since Thursday 630pm. I'm running 2 tanks, a 275l marine and 20l FW. I was on holiday but came home on Friday to deal with the tanks. The house got down to 6° inside, big tank down to 17.4° and the little one to 15.8°. I've since bought a generator and have been running heaters and waterflow for 16hrs (turned off overnight). The tanks are up to about 22° and everything is still alive so far. I've heated my main room to about 28° (it's awful and hot in here) to help bring the tanks up and keep things a bit more stable. Apparently I won't get power until Sunday afternoon at the earliest or Monday night at the latest How are everyone else's tanks?
  4. I thought the deal with 620Ts was that it's thin glass, and the corners are even thinner than the rest so they crack under stress. I'm so sorry you had to go through that Weird dattofish that carpet wasn't covered under house insurance - it's definitely a fixture (unless it's like a mat, rather than real carpet). If a plumbed dishwasher counts as a fixture (unless otherwise specified), then carpet definitely does.
  5. My reading was that the plant died, not the fish? Yay for plant shopping, OP I have about 80-100 plants in my 22l tank (granted, some of them are grasses so only have 4-6 tufts on each plant). Definitey go with more plants. I agree with holding off ferts for a bit. Let the plants establish and go from there.
  6. Thanks. CO2 is definitely not on the table for me. I'm happy with the growth I'm getting, and I'm not really interested in getting more growth that I've got. Re trimming, I'm got small hands so it's not a problem for me, but I bet it can be a pain for people who are bigger than me!
  7. I set it up in November. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=61306 You can see what it looked like when I first planted it in this link above Your tank looks awesome!
  8. LED. No additional lighting, but I'm vaguely thinking about it.
  9. This is my dwarf puffer tank. I'm thinking of rescaping a bit because the fish are getting stuck between plants. The plants are going wild. I've decided I need to prune everything a bit and replant. I'm thinking of moving all of the grass to one corner, java fern and driftwood behind the grass so there's sort of 1 side that's got lower plants than the rest. The middle and other side will be mostly taller plants (the ambulia and indian fern), but more spaced out so the fish can swim between. What do you think about this plan? Does anyone have any better suggestions?
  10. Today I finally got my dwarf puffers. They're in the tank with 2 bumblebee gobies and 2 ottos. I'm hoping that they might be fine in there without turf wars because there's lots of hiding spaces, but if not, I have an alternative tank for the gobies. The plants are going wild. I've decided I need to prune everything a bit and replant. I'm thinking of moving the driftwood to one corner and putting more plants in the middle, but I'm a bit concerned about freaking the fish out in such a small tank. I definitely love the overgrown look, but I'm finding sometimes the fish are getting a bit squished between plants.
  11. Casings float, unhatched eggs sink, brine shrimp suspend themselves in the water.
  12. I'm using eggs that are probably 3-4 years old too, and they're doing pretty well. I was impressed!

    snails

I've found the best method for snail removal is manually taking them out. Trumpets are a pain to get, but if every time you see one you grab it, you'll cut down the population very quickly.
  14. My parents had cherry barbs who did a similar thing. They can all get a bit nippy, but sometimes I guess the band together and get a bit extra aggressive.
